The 8th series of the 2022 Guest Lecture Series took place on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 with the topic "How to Implement A Data Analytics and Emerging Technologies Enabled Accounting Curriculum" presented by Professor Theophanis C. Stratopoulos from the University of Waterloo, Canada and moderated by Nadia Anridho, Ph.D, Accounting Lecturer at Airlangga University. Guest Lecture held online via Zoom and attended by students, academics and practitioners.
Professor Theophanis at the beginning of the presentation of the material provided two motivations for why a change was needed in the accounting teaching curriculum. The development of technology, especially in data analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) become an alarm for all accounting teachers to change the way they teach accounting to students by using technology and data analytics. The goal is that future students will not be replaced by technological developments. Through a good understanding of data analysis, it provides an opportunity for accountants to play a leading role in problem-based analysis of structured and unstructured data. This will help data scientist in exploratory analysis to create value. The material presented by Professor Theophanis includes (1) understanding relational databases and the use of SQL qualifications to identify, extract, and manipulate appropriate data, (2) basic descriptive analysis to understand relevant patterns, (3) basic predictive analysis and interpret results in context. problems, (4) understanding and use of technology that is in great demand, (5) communication key findings.
The Guest Lecture which lasted for 90 minutes was interesting, where the participants were very enthusiastic in asking questions. This event can be watched again on the channel Accounting Department YouTube.
